Our favorite late-night spot was the Monmouth Queen Diner off the
Eatontown Circle. Boy, I remember their french fries covered in brown
gravy! That diner is long gone, but, fortunately, the Blue Swan is
still there!

I remember those late nights at the L&M diner, too. Another fond
memory is New Year's, 1978. We were home for the week, and decided to
get something to eat at around 2am New Years Day. We ended up at the
Blue Swan Diner, and my brother Richard (OTHS class of '76) generously
announced he was picking up the tab. What he didn't know was that they
had tripled the prices on their menu for the holiday, and he almost
fainted when he saw the bill!
What I remember most about HoJo's are the fried clam sandwiches they
had once a week (Thursdays?). There is a place here near the beach in
Carlsbad that serves fried clams very much like those, and I take my
parents there whenever they visit. While we don't eat fried food very
often, it is a meal that brings back lots of happy memories.

Had a big dose of Nostalgia today when reading about
the closing of Howard Johson's on the Boardwalk in the
AP Press online...I posted the article & graphics in
the OT Weblog at:

I can remember going there on sometimes Sunday
mornings during our elementary & middle school years.
On any cold Winter's day, Nothing beat a steaming hot
mug of HoJo's Hot Chocolate!
If breakast was the meal of the day, then it was
chocolate chip pancakes -- yum! [I used to get those
all the time at Perkins Pancake House on the Asbury
Circle]
For lunch, I loved their hot dogs with the split-top,
toasted buns <---the kind that were more like wrapping
a slice of white bread around the hot dog, instead of
a regular old hot dog bun. Even better when
accompanied by fries & a Coke!
And their ice cream was great Any Time...even in the
middle of Winter! It was fun trying all the different
flavors, too.
I also fondly remember the HoJo's on the Asbury Circle
& seem to recall attending a birthday party there when
we were all around 6 or 7. I think it was one of
Debbie Fulginiti's parties complete with balloons &
games [like "Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Donkey"] and, of
course, yummy cake & ice cream!
And although I've always enjoyed going to the various
NJ diners around the area, HoJo's was a unique change
of venue, a different flavor among them.
Good memories all!
Mary J. :-)
