Greetings from the trenches of sunny San Francisco and happy Autumnal
Equinox, fellow Spartans. It's the very first day of fall and that lilt
of blues music in the air mean it's time for the 34th annual San
Francisco Blues Festival. I just got back from working the free Friday
afternoon lunchtime concert in Justin Herman Plaza where the MoFo Party
Band kicked off the festivities before being joined by not just one, but
two separate harmonica virtuosos, Chicago Bob Nelson and then Dave
Maxwell. For those playing along at home, harmonica players are a
particular favorite of Tom, the festival's producer (and coincidentally
SWMBO's stepfather ----- BTW, SWMBO is my email shorthand for She Who
Must Be Obeyed, also known as TLOML - The Light Of My Life).
The weather this past week has been awesome. Forget what you know about
New Jersey's seasonal changes, here in San Francisco September and
October are officially considered summer. (Come here in July and you'd
better pack a parka if you plan on doing anything after sunset. July's
also when we get our jollies watching tourists shiver in their Hawaiian
shirts and Bermuda shorts - but that's a story for another day).
Pop Quiz: Is the SF Blues Festival scheduled for the end of September to
take advantage of the great weather or because it coincides with Rosh
Hashanah? It must be the weather, because none of the performers look
particularly bluish - er Jewish.
Sunday's headliner is Little Richard, the King (and Queen) of Rock &
Roll. I'll tell him the Class of '73 says Good Golly Miss Molly! In the
meantime, here's hoping everyone's well. I'll try to follow up this
email in a few days with a quick note about how the Festival went. Keep
in mind that on a scale of 1 to 10, this party usually goes to 11.
I'm just saying,
Marvin
