...well that got glitched away...here's where I was going, or Joel Sherman
was going...

......rashly, without a plan: "Never has the organization been quite so
accurate a reflection of Steinbrenner: too much money to spend and no discipline to
spend wisely."

a wonderful line.

I think the between-lines suggestion is that Torre has had all these
decisions wrested from him. If that's true, he's in a losing position here, unless he
Wins. If the Yankees don't Win, Torre gets blamed for not winning with a team
he lost control of the decsion-making on. Whatever, my bet is Torre quits this
winter. And I DON'T think he'll retire.

Maybe it's just his personality. I remember he was the only guy who gave up a
homer to Mark McGwire who refused to sign a baseball (for McGwire or the HOF)
after the 70 homer year.

This is exactly where I was going yesterday when I said I thought the Boone
deal was one more dig at Torre.
Was Joe Torre consulted on Mendoza/Stanton? If he was, do you think for a
second he would have said to not sign them. Was Torre consulted on Boone?
There's no way to even speculate, especially because, short of giving up
Claussen, it is a good deal for the Yanks as Ventura has become a bit
unreliable of late.
I think there is a damn good possibility that Steinbrenner is setting up
Torre for a fall. Torre clearly has become the most popular Yankee and the
guy who is getting most of the credit for their successes. That has to gall
Steinbrenner, but what has to really drive the mad boss nuts is that he
can't touch Torre and his coaches. Do you think Zimmer would have survived
his verbal assault on Boss George a few months ago with anyone else on earth
managing the team. It had to drive Steinbrenner crazy to not be able to "put
Zim in "his" place" so to speak.

I think we drafted Prior but did not sign him because we did not want to
meet his asking price for a signing bonus.

I saw Witasick when he was pitching in A ball for the Cardinals and later
briefly met him when he came into the stands to sit with one of his pitchers
who I'd been talking to all game (this pitcher was running the radar gun and
charting pitches). Witasick had literally been knocked out of the game as a
batter hit a ball off his leg. Anyway, after that I followed Witasick's
career wherever he went. I don't at all remember any of what you are
describing regarding Witasick as a person. I know that a lot of Yankee fans
did not like him because of his poor Yankee performance.

I've not yet read Sherman's article. I find him to sometimes be too
critical so as to create controversy. Michael Kay did make a good point
last night in the post game show that the media has seemed to be looking to
jump over any little thing that Benitez does wrong when in actuality he's
not been that bad as a Yankee. Kept us in the game last night.

I do but I'm Mr. Frugal. I buy my hats from the guys selling them cheap
outside the Stadium (none of those sales end up benefiting the Yankees or
MLB) and a lot of people give me Yankee hats as gifts. The only two Yankee
items I've really bought that I've paid for that MLB/Yankee logo is a
sweatshirt and a pair of shorts. Oh, yes, four pairs of Yankee socks.

If Torre does not retire that means he gets hired by someone else. Isn't
Torre the highest paid manager? Then either one of two things has to happen.
He has to accept a pay cut somewhere else or someone else has to pay him
what he is currently earning. How many teams do you see doing that? And
how many teams do you think he'd consider managing? Wouldn't it have to be
a top level team? So how many teams fit that description and would be
willing to pay him top dollar? Finally, does his contract expire at the end
of this season? If not, then the other team has to deal with
George/compensation issues to get Torre.

Vinny

On the other hand, regarding Boone specifically, this is what I got today
from a Red Sox fan/Yankee hater...

Vinny

Boone is a vast improvement for the Yanks. And they will probably pick
up another right fielder in a month off the waver wire, i.e. Juan G, or
someone like that. The Sox made some nice pick ups. But the teams are
still pretty evenly matched and if the Yanks get a waver claim like
previously mentioned, they have the better team with their starting
pitching, although their bullpen is suspect, except Rivera.

So, I wonder what's in the air, or if the moon is full or what the hell is
going on?????
Not that our little slice of tranquility and Yankee discourse is in full
rage, but you have to admit it has been let's say contentious of late. Well,
you all should hear Mike Francesa on the Mike and the Mad Dog show. Dog is
on vacation and Francesa is just ripping every Yankee caller to shreds, I
wonder what the rage is all about.
Every called gets shut and put in his place as if they are morons and
imbeciles. All over the Yankee trades and the state of the roster.
Anyway, because I have the time, I am listening to and will report on the
Joe Torre Story on the Fan.
Joe is basically tooting Rocket's and Petite horns.
He says they are a better team and he is sorry to see Robin go, but Aaron
Boone is a rising star and can steal a base, but Joe doesn't know about him
defensively. Gabe White he says the Yanks were interested in for a long
time.
Joe says he was a part of the conversations with Tampa, but they were
limited.
On Claussen Joe says he thinks he was as high as we think he was on
Claussen, but the Yanks are trying to win now.
He says the pitching after this year is a question mark.
As to Ventura in the club house, he thinks they have enough people to pick
up the slack, including Boone!
Joe doesn't think they need more offense, he is now saying that theReds
dismantling the team is what caused the trade.
He just said he had a falling out with Tampa over Contreras, he says he was
in the loop so to speak on the latest moves. On right field, sierra vs left
handers and Garcia and Delucie against Righties.
On Weaver, and his fit when Hammond gave up the homers, Joe says that he
didn't really know about it, he doesn'tthink it was aimed at anyone in
particular, and Joe basically dismissed it.
Contreras, Joe says, is taking a lot longer, but there is no set back and
has him penciled in for rehab until 8/21 and then coming to the big club.
Joe also hints that Contreras is headed to the bullpen.
On pulling Benitez and bringing in Mariano, he wasn't protecting Benitez, he
just had Mariano ready and would have kicked himself if he didn't use him.
On the middle relief Joe says Orosco, Benitez, are doing okay. Hammond needs
to get going, Osuna looks good.
He say she may break up the top of the order, Soriano may be moved from lead
off, Jeter to the top.
Great line, Soriano walked up to Torre and said he heard the reason he
didn't play him the night before was that they were trying to trade him and
Torre told it was true but nobody wanted him.
All in all, I am getting better, more accurate Yankee info right here than
from the FAN

"He say she may break up the top of the order, Soriano may be moved from
lead
off, Jeter to the top."

********

Hey, Dennis,

I was just thinking about this new wrinkle. Jeter is on fire, Boone can hit
and run and steal, and notwithstanding Torre's right/left/right/left
propensity, maybe a new lineup is in order.

I like the idea of Soriano giving up the leadoff spot. So, one permutation
against Hudson tonight could be:

Jeter
Boone
Giambi
Bernie
Matsui
Johnson
Posada
Sierra/Garcia/Delluci
Soriano

We lose some cold ABs from Soriano, but we have that 3-speed option we
haven't had for quite a while.

How long will it be before we hear the Yankee crowd moaning "BOOOOOOONE"?

You know, I typed while I listened and I hit send instead of taking the 10
minutes to proof read what I was typing.
So she is really a he named Torre.
To expand on what torre said, Francesa asked if Soriano would cop an
attitude if dropped in the line up and Torre gave an emphatic no, saying how
good a kid Soriano is and then Joe told the no one wants to trade for him
story.

As if you all can't tell, when I post it is as if I am talking, typing what
I think, I have hit 40 WPM, so, sorry about the typos, and not sorry for the
ridiculous blathering I tend to send to the list.
I can see Barry shaking his head as he reads this...

I can almost guarantee you he'll not have two left-handers like Matsui and
Johnson back-to-back and will split them up with Posada.

All say Mondesi plays to win
By Ed Price, Tribune
CHICAGO - The first thing you hear from people about new Diamondbacks right
fielder Raul Mondesi is that he plays the game hard. He runs out every
grounder, he never slacks off in the field.

“The best way to characterize him is that he was going to do something
exciting every game,” said Eric Karros, who played with Mondesi during his
seven seasons in Los Angeles. “You didn't know if it was going to be good
or bad. But it was going to be exciting — guaranteed, every game.”

In fact, Mondesi — acquired Tuesday from the New York Yankees and expected
to make his first start today against the Chicago Cubs — does everything to
the fullest, people who know him say. Whether it's his life off the field
or his emotions in the clubhouse, Mondesi, 32, hardly ever throttles back.

“He's not a guy you're trying to read or it takes you a week or two to
figure him out,” said Florida outfielder Todd Hollandsworth, also a
teammate of Mondesi's in Los Angeles. “What you see is what you get.

“Mondy is Mondy. He does not back down from anything. He's not trying to
trick anybody, he's not trying to deceive anybody. He is Raul Mondesi, and
he'll tell you, ‘I am who I am and this is what I do.’ ”

Another former teammate compared Mondesi's personality to the proverbial
bull in a china shop — not in a bad way, he said, but to illustrate a lack
of subtlety.

“He's pretty much a happy-go-lucky kind of guy,” said Dave Keller, who was
Mondesi's hitting coach last winter with Aguilas of the Dominican League.
“He has fun.

“When it was time for him to compete and get after it, he was there.
(Mondesi batted .375 as the Dominican team won the Caribbean Series.) He's
still got a lot of ability left in him. I respect the way he plays the game.”

Davey Johnson, who managed Mondesi in Los Angeles, once said, “The best
thing about Mondy is his expressions. He enjoys playing baseball and it
shows in the way he plays. He has a boyish glee.”

Even Toronto manager Carlos Tosca, who like Johnson had a run-in with
Mondesi, isn't outright critical.

“I don't think he's a bad teammate,” Tosca said. “He just marches to a
little bit of a different drummer at times when it comes to stuff off the
field.”

Mondesi has had notable incidents with three of his past five managers.

Under Johnson in 1999, Mondesi first bristled when he was dropped from
cleanup to the fifth spot. Later that summer, at Bank One Ballpark, after
the bottom of an inning Mondesi went from right field into the visitors’
bullpen instead of the dugout, spending the half-inning there before the
Diamondbacks batted again.

Then, benched one day because he was late to the park, he launched a tirade
at Johnson and general manager Kevin Malone, demanding to be traded.

“(Bleep) Davey and (bleep) Malone, they try to put all of our problems on
me,” Mondesi said. “They're trying to say that all this (stuff) is my
fault. That's the way they feel, fine. Just get me out of here. (Bleep)
Davey. (Bleep) Malone. (Bleep) both of them.

“I'm tired of all this. I told my agent to get me the (bleep) out of here
as soon as possible. I can't take this anymore. I've tried to deal with
this all year. I told them to trade me because I don't want to (bleeping)
be here.”

Karros said while it may not have been appropriate for Mondesi to express
his feelings in public, he was within his rights to be upset at the way
Johnson and Malone were treating him.

“He's not one of those guys who's going to be a politically correct guy,”
Karros said. “He wears his emotions on his sleeve.”

Mondesi — who signed with the Dodgers when he was 17, eventually winning
the 1994 Rookie of the Year award and two Gold Gloves — was traded after
the season, to the Blue Jays for Shawn Green.

After 2 1/2 seasons (and three managers) in Toronto, another case of
tardiness led to more problems. Mondesi was 10 minutes late for a meeting,
so Tosca sat him out. Mondesi claimed he was sick

“Everybody’s going to say ‘Mondesi’s starting trouble,’ ” Mondesi said.
“I’m a nice guy. But I don’t like to see that (stuff). The same happened to
me four years ago in L.A. Ten minutes after the meeting? Come on. I’ve
played this game for too long. I play too hard, this game, every (bleeping)
day to have this (stuff) happen to me.”

Six days later, the Jays sent Mondesi to the Yanks. At the time, one friend
of Mondesi's predicted the wealth of nightlife in New York would be a
dangerous temptation for Mondesi. But that never surfaced as a problem.

The Yankees, in fact, were willing to keep Mondesi through this season —
until he left the team in mid-game on Sunday. Upset about being removed for
a pinch hitter for the second straight day, Mondesi was not on the team
flight from Boston to Anaheim.

“To me, discipline is a big part of being a good team,” New York manager
Joe Torre told reporters after Mondesi was traded and the incident was
disclosed. “And a lot of the discipline has to come from within yourself. I
know he was frustrated. . . . He's not a bad person, and I want to make
sure everybody knows that. I just think he got emotional about it, and it's
not good for the club.”

Before sending three players to the Yankees for Mondesi, the Diamondbacks
got an endorsement from their Latin American coordinator and fellow
Dominican, Junior Noboa.

“I'd take nine guys like that,” said Lenny Harris, briefly a teammate of
Mondesi's in Los Angeles. “I don't know him as a bad attitude. I know him
as a hard player.”

In truth, all Arizona needs is for Mondesi to behave for two months. He is
a free agent at the end of the season and probably would not fit into the
D-Backs’ long-term cost-cutting plans.

Impending free agency and the postseason provide twin incentives for
Mondesi to produce and toe the line.

What happens to Henson?

Torre believes third baseman's future is in baseball

ANAHEIM -- When the Yankees traded for third baseman Aaron Boone on
Thursday, they made it clear where Drew Henson stands within the
organization. Unfortunately for Henson, that's in Columbus.

Once thought to be the third baseman of the future for the Yankees,
Henson has toiled in the minors for three seasons, unable to make the
necessary strides to give the franchise the optimism that he will
soon be ready to man the hot corner in the Bronx.

Henson, 23, is hitting .227 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 106
games for Triple-A Columbus this season, striking out 94 times in 383
at-bats. Last season, he batted .240 with 18 homers and 65 RBIs in
128 games for Columbus, spending September with the Yankees as a
late-season callup.

"Drew Henson hasn't developed to the point where he's in
consideration at this time for the Major League side," said general
manager Brian Cashman. "With this move, we recognize that there's a
position of need for this organization. The move on Aaron Boone
speaks volumes about where Drew Henson is in terms of his development
at this time."

Casey Close, Henson's agent, indicated that the Yankees' acquisition
of Boone would not drive his client to the National Football League,
where he is currently the property of the Houston Texans, having been
selected in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft.

Henson backed up Tom Brady for two seasons at the University of
Michigan, throwing six touchdown passes in relief. In 2000, he took
over as the starter and led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record and a
Citrus Bowl appearance, throwing 18 touchdowns and just four
interceptions before skipping his senior season to pursue baseball.

"My immediate reaction is that the Yankees feel Aaron Boone is an
All-Star, a guy to get them over the hump," said Close. "The question
becomes 2004.

"His abilities are still there and he's working on them," Close said.
"I don't think what Drew is going to do is going to be dictated by
anyone else's circumstances. I don't think he's worried about anyone
dictating his options."

Henson, who was drafted by the Yankees in the third round of the 1998
draft, was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in July 2000, part of a
six-player deal that brought Denny Neagle to the Bronx. The Yankees
re-acquired Henson in March 2001, trading for him and signing him to
a six-year, $17 million contract. Henson has $12 million remaining on
the deal, receiving $2.2 million next season, $3.8 million in 2005
and $6 million in 2006.

"We have a lot invested in him, and we'll continue to support him and
try to allow him to be the best player he's capable of being in
baseball," Cashman said. "If Casey and Drew have separate decisions
to make, that's something we can't effect."

Next season doesn't appear to be much of a question for the Yankees,
who are likely to offer Boone salary arbitration and retain him as
their starter. That "decision" that Cashman referred to concerns
Henson's other talent -- football. A former quarterback at the
University of Michigan, Henson could go play in the National Football
League and start for many teams.

Henson appears to be headed for another season at Columbus, which
Close believes may have something to do with his problems.

"People there haven't forgotten that he's a Michigan football player,
there's still the whole thing about Ohio State-Michigan," Close said.
"It's not the best nurturing environment for him. Getting out of
Columbus would probably be the best thing for him."

For that to happen, Henson would have to be traded to another team,
or he would have to give up baseball and pursue a career in the NFL.
Joe Torre, who has seen Henson in three Spring Trainings, believes
that he has a future in baseball, as long as he has the patience to
work his way to the Majors.

"Sometimes he gets in his own way," Torre said. "Like a lot of young
players, he gets very impatient with himself. Baseball is a game you
have to let come to you, and he gets a little anxious. He has power,
hits the ball the other way and has a good arm and good hands. I hope
he can play baseball, because I know he has the ability and tools to
play."

Cashman said Thursday that he plans to speak with Close and Henson to
discuss the team's latest move.

"The fact of the matter is that he's had some opportunities and at
this point, he'll continue to get the opportunity to show what he can
do," Cashman said. "He just hasn't shown it to the point where we can
wait to see if he's going to be a productive player for us in the big
leagues next year. It's unfortunate, but those are the facts."

QUEZADA TO BC YANKS (BC Press Release)

Elvis isn't coming to Battle Creek. Elvys is. The Yankees have added
right-handed pitcher Elvys Quezada to the roster. Quezada was 3-0
with a 1.83 earned-run average for the Staten Island Yankees of the
short-season New York-Penn League this season. He is expected to
start for Battle Creek Saturday night against South Bend.

The Yankees continue to strengthen their roster as they battle for a
playoff spot in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League. "Battle
Creek is in third place and I have a chance to help them make the
playoffs," Quezada told the Staten Island Advance. "It's a move up
for me and I'm looking forward to it."

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Quezada was selected in the 15th round of
this year's draft out of Seton Hall. He went 3-5 this season with a
5.43 ERA at Seton Hall, and led the Pirates in strikeouts. Quezada
was chosen in the same round by the New York Mets in the 2002 draft,
but opted to return for his senior season at Seton Hall.

At Staten Island, Quezada started eight games and struck out 39 in
39.1 innings. Opponents hit just .176 against him. He was named the
New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week for July 14-20. Quezada was
one of eight Staten Island Yankees who were suspended in connection
with a 28-minute benches-clearing brawl with the Brooklyn Cyclones on
July 17. He was fined $100 and served a three-day suspension.
========
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Fernando Seguignol and Drew Henson both
drove home a pair of runs in the third inning to lift the Columbus
Clippers to a 7-2 victory over the Richmond Braves. Seguignol laced a
two-run single to give his club a 4-1 lead and Henson ripped a
two-run double two batters later to cap the six-run third. Craig
Wilson finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Columbus,
which ended the month of July with a 17-12 mark. Christian Parker
(4-6) allowed a run and four hits, walking six and striking out
three, in five innings for the win.

B.C. Yanks win, 6-5

The Enquirer

DAYTON -- Jon-Mark Sprowl got his first hit with Battle Creek -- a
game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning -- and right-hander Jon
Skaggs notched his first professional victory as the Yankees defeated
the Dayton Dragons 6-5 Thursday night in a Midwest League baseball
game.

The Yankees have won two straight in the four-game series, which ends tonight.

Sprowl -- who joined Battle Creek on Wednesday in a trade between the
New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks -- played one-half
inning behind the plate Wednesday night. He was the Yankees'
designated hitter Thursday, and after going 0-for-1 with a walk and a
hit by pitch, Sprowl ripped a two-out single in the eighth to break a
5-5 tie.

Skaggs (1-2) went seven innings, scattered six hits and struck out
five in his fifth straight strong outing. Skaggs joined Battle Creek
from extended spring training on June 19. He dropped his first two
starts, and had five straight no-decisions before defeating the
Dragons.

A five-run third inning helped Battle Creek pull ahead of Dayton and
into third place in the Eastern Division.

Dayton scored twice in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees battled back with five runs on five hits and two errors
in the third. Sandy Madera led off with a double and Omir Santos
singled. Madera scored as Joaquin Arias reached on an error. After a
sacrifice bunt by Gabe Lopez, Santos scored on a single by Erold
Andrus.

Jayson Drobiak ripped an RBI single to give Battle Creek a 3-2 lead.
Matt Carson walked to load the bases. Rudy Guillen made it 5-2 with a
two-run single.

A two-run homer by Tiago Campos -- his second home run of the series
and the season -- in the fourth pulled the Dragons to within 5-4.
Dayton tied the game in the seventh on a lead-off double, a sacrifice
bunt and a sacrifice fly.

A one-out walk to Drobiak, a single by Carson and a fielder's choice
set the stage for Sprowl. He hit the first pitch from reliever Matt
McWilliams for an RBI single and 6-5 Battle Creek lead.

Steven Wiseman pitched the eighth for Battle Creek. Matt Brumit
pitched the ninth -- needing just seven pitches -- for his 16th save
of the season.

Only the strong survive

ADVANCE STAFF WRITER

Even when the Staten Island Yankees win -- they can still frustrate their fans.

Alexander Santa's base hit up the middle in the bottom of the 11th
inning gave the Yanks a 5-4 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades
last night, but only a handful of loyal fans were still around to
witness the conclusion. Perhaps the rain had something to do with the
departures, but more likely it was the fact the Yankees should have
won this one in nine innings -- when most of the fans were still in
their seats.

The Baby Bombers had been in a horrendous slump over their previous
five games (three runs), but snapped out of it in the very first
inning against HV starter Jarrod Farrell.

Santa lined a one-out single to center and Hector Zamora followed
with a two-run homer over the right-centerfield wall for his
team-leading fourth round tripper to give the Yanks a 2-1 advantage.

In the second, Carlos Rosario was hit by a pitch, Melky Cabrera
singled to right, and Zamora drew a walk to load the bases with two
outs.

Designated hitter Horace Lawrence immediately fell behind Farrell 0-2
on a pair of pitches that appeared to be off the plate.

"I'm a pretty emotional guy, but I tried not to show how annoyed I
was at those first two pitches," Lawrence said. "My last hitting
coach (in the Independent League) was Willie McGee. And he and coach
(Kevin) Higgins here have the same approach to hitting with two
strikes. Choke up on the bat, keep your weight back, and take a
short, even stroke. Try to put the ball in play as if you were
playing pepper."

Lawrence worked the count to 2-2, then lined a two-run single back
through the box for a 4-1 Yankee lead. "He (Farrell) threw me a
change-up,"Lawrence added. "I stayed back and put a pretty good swing
on it."

Yankees' starter Chase Wright did terrific job working out of jams in
the second, third and fifth frames, and left with a three-run
advantage.

However, reliever Phillip Tribe surrendered two runs in the sixth
when he hit a batter, issued a walk and fired two wild pitches that
plated runners, and the lead was cut to a single run.

That margin held up until the ninth when an infield error by Adam
Shorts, a single, and a bases-loaded walk by closer Mike Gardner sent
the game into extra innings.

"That would have been a tough loss tonight," Lawrence said. "I'm just
glad I was part of helping us get a win."

That win came in the 11th when Tyson Hanish drew a lead-off walk,
moved to second on a botched pick-off attempt, then to third when
Cabrera dropped a perfect sacrifice bunt.

Santa delivered the winning hit and the Yanks picked up just their
fourth home victory.
